Allen's interest in the protection of workers started in 1971. Allen worked as a scientific professional for many years in the environmental, health and safety department of a Fortune 10 company. He pioneered methods for industrial hygiene air sampling, while conducting hundreds of physical site inspections and compliance review studies. He was the editor, contributing author, coordinator, and chief motivator behind Environmental, Health and Safety Considerations in Business and Property Transactions, a 1992 book used to train nationally recognized professionals in environmental areas.

He has taught many local, national, and international training courses in safe work practices in such industries as oil and gas, mining, and chemicals. He has also worked extensively with county, state, and federal regulatory agencies to make regulations simpler and the environment safer. He has had active involvement in over two billion dollars of potentially contaminated property transactions. He attended law school after experiencing difficulty in meeting corporate short-term goals at the expense of employee health. His pro bono work has included environmental health and safety oversight for older urban housing.

Allen's legal practice focuses on toxic torts and commercial law. He was also a board certified industrial hygienist from 1979 to 2003 (Retired), a certified safety professional, and a qualified environmental professional.

Allen attended law school at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Prior to receiving his law degree in 1981, Allen earned his B.S. from Roanoke College, his M.S. in public health from the University of North Carolina, and his M.B.A. from DePaul University.

Allen is admitted to practice law in the state of Illinois and in the United States District Courts for the Central District of Illinois, Northern District of Illinois, Northern District of Indiana and Eastern District of Wisconsin. He is an active member of the Illinois State Bar, the American Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, The Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association.
